It’s summer – have you suddenly become allergic to your jewellery?

You might have worn your favourite pieces every day during the holidays, but now your skin is red and itchy. This could be an allergic reaction, most commonly to nickel, which is found in many types of jewellery. When it’s warm and you're sweating or swimming, jewellery tends to release more nickel. Heat and moisture can increase the risk of developing a nickel allergy, especially if the jewellery is worn tightly against the skin. It can happen to anyone – even if you’ve never had problems before.

Water-resistant jewellery – without the risk of nickel allergy

Blomdahl’s jewellery is developed in consultation with dermatologists and carefully manufactured in Halmstad, Sweden – where we’ve been making jewellery since 1985.

Our jewellery comes with a unique ceramic coating that is:

Our bracelets, necklaces and anklets are made from high-quality stainless steel (316L) and coated with a solid, ceramic gold- or silver-coloured coating. This durable, water-resistant and skin friendly coating was specially developed in consultation with dermatologists.

This means you can confidently wear your Blomdahl jewellery every day – even while sunbathing, swimming or sleeping – without worrying about nickel allergy or other health issues, or that it will affect your jewellery.

Water-resistant earrings

Earrings sit close to the skin and are often exposed to moisture – for example when you shower, exercise, or sweat on a hot summer day. That’s why it’s especially important for earrings to be skin friendly, to help prevent allergic reactions.

Our earrings are made from medical grade plastic and pure medical titanium – materials that are guaranteed safe for sensitive skin. They’re lightweight, comfortable, and water-resistant. With a timeless design, our jewellery is made to be worn often and loved for years – even by those with nickel allergy.

Water-resistant rings

Why do we manufacture our skin friendly jewellery and medical ear piercing in Sweden?

Our vision is to contribute to a more responsible and caring jewellery world. That’s why we only make ear piercing products and jewellery that we would give to our own children. To keep our promise of protecting both your child’s and your own skin and health, we produce and control our jewellery in Sweden. This allows us to take full responsibility, from material selection all the way to the finished products.

Blomdahl stands for "medical safety" – and is the medically safe and reliable choice. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about nickel allergy or other health risks, whether during piercing or while wearing our jewellery.

Jewellery made outside of Sweden – risk of harmful substances and insufficient controls

Unfortunately, it's not only clothing and textiles that can contain dangerous chemicals or prohibited substances. Jewellery, made in countries outside the EU, which many pieces are, can also contain harmful or even toxic substances. The Swedish governmental agency, the Chemicals Agency, even warns against purchasing cheap jewellery online, as it too often contains excessive levels of harmful substances such as lead, nickel, cadmium, and phthalates.

Many manufacturers, particularly in Asia, struggle to guarantee full control over materials such as nickel. Even though material certificates may be available, it's difficult to know if they are genuine and if the jewellery truly meets the EU’s safety requirements. Random sampling is not sufficient to ensure the safety of all jewellery. Without proper controls and regulations, there's a risk that jewellery with excessive levels of nickel or other harmful substances will reach consumers. Furthermore, the term "nickel-free" is often used carelessly in marketing, despite the jewellery potentially containing large amounts of nickel and causing allergic reactions.

This is how Blomdahl ensures full control over skin-friendliness

So that you can adorn yourself without the risk of nickel allergy or to safely and securely pierce your ears, we believe several important factors are required:

Careful selection and control of materials. We have carefully chosen skin friendly and safe materials in consultation with dermatologists. Each delivery comes with a certificate guaranteeing the content. Additionally, we examine the material using advanced technology to ensure it meets our requirements and contains no harmful substances.

In-house production and strict quality control according to ISO13485. Since we have our production here in Sweden, we are responsible for every step in the manufacturing process and can maintain full control over all the materials we use. We also have a medical-device quality system (ISO13485) that monitors everything and ensures full traceability through LOT numbers for each individual piece of jewellery. This way, we can guarantee that your Blomdahl jewellery is gentle on your skin and that your ear piercing is sterile and safe for your health.

Is Blomdahl the only jewellery brand in the world with such precise control? It may be possible, but we would still argue that Blomdahl is the brand with the best control globally.

This year, Blomdahl is celebrating 40 wonderful years!

Halmstad, the city with three hearts as its symbol, has been our home since the beginning. Here, we design and manufacture high-quality jewellery with love and care for sensitive skin. Jewellery that is the natural choice for children getting their first ear piercings, and for anyone with a nickel allergy – or those who want to avoid getting one. Each piece of jewellery is crafted in Sweden with precision, care, and great responsibility!

Why did Blomdahl start?

Blomdahl was founded in the 1980s, a time when ear piercing posed significant risks. AIDS and nickel allergy were two serious medical issues that many didn't consider. Exposing your skin and health to risks just to look good was not acceptable. Father and son Blomdahl saw a need for change – they wanted to offer a better alternative for both children and adults. In 1985, they founded Blomdahl in Halmstad with a clear vision: to create safe and reliable products for ear piercing. The result? Blomdahl became the first in the world to introduce medical ear piercing. The method uses sterile single-use products and skin friendly earrings, which protect against nickel allergy and promote healing.

Wash your hands

It is important to do everything possible to prevent dirt and bacteria from getting into your new piercing. Therefore, make sure that you don’t touch your newly pierced ears without first washing your hands.

Cleanse the ear

Cleanse the new piercing in your ear thoroughly in front and in back, morning and evening. Keep the earrings in your ear, even during cleansing.

Use a liquid soap and we recommend that you cleanse the piercing while showering/washing your hair. Rinse thoroughly with running water and dry the area with a clean tissue or Q-tip.

For cleansing at other times, use Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs, which are gentle to the skin. You can use them to cleanse between the ear and the earring/earring back. Allow to air dry. Use a new cleansing swab for the other ear, as well as new swabs the next time you cleanse the piercings. Note! Do not cleanse using alcohol.

Piercing Aftercare – cleansing swabs

After getting your ears pierced, it is important to keep the holes clean so that they do not become infected. With these cleansing swabs you can easily clean the area around the newly pierced hole. The swabs are gentle on the skin and alcohol-free, which means they do not dry out the skin or cause a burning sensation. They can be taken with you everywhere, enabling you to keep your piercings clean, even if you don’t have access to running water.

Important points to consider during healing

There are some things to keep in mind and which help ensure that the healing process goes as smoothly as possible.

Clean, dry and airy

Make sure that you always keep your new piercing clean, dry and airy.

Cover your ears

When using hairspray, perfume, makeup, hair dyes, etc., it is a good idea to cover and protect your ears.

Avoid getting snagged

Be extra careful when pulling clothes over your head so that the earrings do not snag and get caught in the clothing.

Swimming

When swimming in a pool, lake or the sea: Wait with this as long as possible, or avoid dunking your head under the water. After swimming, cleanse the piercing using a liquid soap or Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs.

Infected ear piercing – what should I do?

Any of the following could be an indication of infection: redness, swelling, pain or rash.

• If you have had your earlobe pierced, take out the earring and cleanse your ear. If it is not better when you wake up the next day, consult with a doctor.

• If you have had the cartilage in your ear pierced, take out the earring, cleanse, and consult with a doctor immediately.

Do not put the piercing earring back in again, let the hole heal.

Changing earrings

After about 6 weeks (about 12 weeks for cartilage), you can switch to other earrings. Here is how to remove the piercing earrings:

• Wash your hands and ears carefully. We suggest that you switch to other earrings immediately after showering/washing your hair.

• Grasp the earring on the front side of the lobe. Use your other hand to grasp the earring back, on the back side of the lobe.

• Then, firmly wiggle the earring back, back and forth until it comes off.

• Carefully remove the post earring

• Put in a clean, new earring.

Ear piercings continue healing throughout the first year

It takes up to a year for pierced holes to heal fully, so keep the following in mind:

• Make sure earrings are worn continuously for the first year because the holes can quickly shrink and/or grow again.

• Keep cleaning and checking the holes regularly (front and back) throughout the first year.

• One tip to aid healing is to wear our lightweight pendant earrings. These make it easier to keep the area around newly pierced holes clean, dry and aired.

Skin friendly children’s earrings that aid healing

Reduce the risk of infection in the first year

• Take care when changing earrings. Since the skin that has formed inside the holes is still thin and delicate, it is easily damaged and an infection can develop.
 
• Therefore, wash your hands and clean the earrings before changing them.
 
• Continue to keep the area around the holes clean, dry and aired.
 
• If you wear earrings with backs, the back and the earring should not be pushed too tight against the ear, as this risks them adhering to the ear. Pay extra attention to the back of the ears.

Avoid a nickel allergy with Blomdahl’s help

Nickel allergy is a common problem, with as many as 30 million people being allergic to nickel in Europe alone. That means there are lots of people out there who want to wear jewellery but can’t. Blomdahl was founded back in 1985 to solve precisely this problem. We endeavour to offer everyone, men, women and children, the chance to wear jewellery safely, including those who have sensitive skin, are allergic to nickel or, quite simply, want to avoid the risk of developing a nickel allergy.

First-year earrings are particularly important for your skin

The risk of developing a nickel allergy is greatest during the first year after getting your ears pierced. It can actually take up to a year for holes to heal fully, and your skin will therefore be particularly sensitive during this period.

Choosing earrings with care can help to keep your skin healthy. Blomdahl has, in consultation with dermatologists, developed jewellery that is proven to be skin friendly and suitable for everyone, especially those with newly pierced ears.

Consequently, we make more effort than most and take extra care over details that make a big difference. We are meticulous in what we do, so that everyone, even those with particularly sensitive skin, can wear jewellery from Blomdahl.

In order to live up to our promises, we are systematic and precise in our production activities in Halmstad, aided by our medical device quality system ISO 13485. This means that we can guarantee that our piercing products are sterile and safe for anyone wanting to have their ears or nose pierced. When it comes to our jewellery, you can be confident that we have complete control and can ensure traceability for all the materials we use, which guarantees that every single piece of jewellery produced, is kind to your skin.

We also maintain complete control of the manufacturing process from start to finish – from design sketch to the finished piece. It all starts in our design department in Halmstad, where ideas take shape, materials are selected and samples are produced and carefully tested. Once the design committee has made the decision to launch a new jewellery product, it goes into production and we follow the entire process from manufacturing to finished piece. We check and document every stage in order to guarantee quality jewellery that is both comfortable and kind to your skin, so that you can wear it with confidence every day.
 
Through extensive experience of skin friendly jewellery production, we have accumulated valuable knowledge about both skin and health. Over the years, we have worked with dermatologists to understand what is best for the skin and what is not. Naturally we always choose what is best for you and your skin, while ensuring stylish designs for our jewellery.
 
Collaboration with our dermatologists is an essential part of our continuing efforts to keep abreast of the most skin friendly materials. Their research and knowledge are hugely valuable when it comes to creating jewellery that is kind to the skin.

Skin friendly jewellery today and tomorrow

Unfortunately, the nickel allergy issue looks set to remain a challenge for the future. Did you know that roughly 30 million people suffer from nickel allergy in Europe alone? Despite regulations and restrictions from the EU regarding nickel in jewellery, nickel allergy continues to be a significant health problem, caused in large part by wearing jewellery.

Blomdahl was founded back in 1985 as a solution to this widespread problem. What continues to inspire us in our work is the positive response from people who can now wear jewellery again after many years.
Another motivating factor is the potential to constantly improve, develop and learn new things. Other challenges we currently face, like so many others, involve minimising our environmental impact. We continuously work to find smarter ways to manufacture and to improve our recycling methods. Through actions such as reducing energy consumption, optimising transport and cutting down on packaging material, we are doing our best to also be kind to the environment.
 
Did you know that Blomdahl has a presence in over 30 countries? Since nickel allergy is a challenge for jewellery-wearers worldwide, we have supplied our piercing products and jewellery to customers throughout the world right from the start. Our team here in Halmstad now numbers around 50 dedicated employees, and we include our sales office in Denmark in that figure. Our distributors around the world represent us on local markets in order to offer the best possible service. Even though new jewellery designs are constantly taking shape, our day-to-day focus, just as it was at the start, remains creating the safest of products for medical piercing and skin conscious jewellery. Thanks to you caring about the kind of jewellery you and your loved ones wear, we have been able to donate to organisations that work to make a difference to those who need it the most.
 
We have given a Christmas donation to Save the Children, in order to give children in conflict areas food, warm clothes and safer places to grow up in. We are also involved in supporting the Children’s Cancer Foundation’s important work, so that all children who get cancer survive, and can live a good and long life.
 
Both organizations work long-term to give children security and hope for the future. Therefore, it feels especially good to give these organisations a caring Christmas present this year.

Something that enhances your style and strengthens your personality.
 
A favourite piece of jewellery should also stand the test of time. In purely physical terms our jewellery can cope with being worn next to your skin every day, but you can also be sure that our designs will never go out of style. Timeless classics do not reflect short-lived trends but are designed to look good year after year. That’s what sustainability means in our book.

Talking about sustainability, it is equally important to us that our jewellery is produced in a responsible manner. This means that you can treat yourself and others with a clear conscience. Our jewellery is produced at our facility in Halmstad, Sweden. Here we set very high standards, with regular checks throughout the process, and we pay particular attention to details that are perhaps not always visible to the naked eye, but which help to ensure that the pieces will last. A long-term approach is important to us.

Blomdahl began producing piercing jewellery because we realised that there was no safe and hygienic ear piercing method available. Questionable materials are still widely used in the jewellery industry, and there are question marks around production and quality too. This has only strengthened our conviction to do things our way.
 
We have always collaborated with dermatologists and keep abreast of what’s best for the skin and what we should avoid. Once we know that, we only choose the best materials for you and your skin. Materials that also produce beautiful jewellery.

Men and jewellery through history

In the past century, women may not have had the monopoly on wearing jewellery, but they have certainly been significantly overrepresented. Recently, however, we have seen growing interest in jewellery among men, be they artists, actors or sports stars, and ‘regular guys’ in particular.

No matter what your preferred style is, here at Blomdahl we think everyone should be able to wear attractive jewellery made using skin friendly materials. Which is why we have produced a collection that we think will appeal to a wide range of men.
The fact that men are increasingly wearing jewellery may seem like a modern trend, but history shows just the opposite. Men began wearing jewellery long before women – to elevate their status, as protective talismans, and to bring good luck.

Men have always worn jewellery

The Neanderthals were the first humans to use accessories. Historians believe that they may have made the world’s first pieces of jewellery around 130,000 years ago, by stringing together animal teeth and shells.
 
The Egyptians, circa 5,000 years ago, adorned themselves as a way of safeguarding their future. The more silver and gold jewellery they wore, the more attractive they thought they would be to the gods who had power over health, wealth and the afterlife.
 
In ancient Greece, soldiers wore jewellery into battle. Metal and leather cuffs were an attempt to ensure spiritual protection during battle – a practice also followed by ancient Roman troops.
 
It was British royalty during the Tudor period who started the trend for wearing heavy gold chains, while precious stones were seen as a status symbol. For a period, it was only rich men of high rank in the church who were allowed to wear them. Henry VIII’s jewel box was found to contain at least 230 rings, 320 brooches and countless necklaces.
 
During the 16th and 17th centuries, a popular trend among men in Europe was to wear a single earring – often a large drop pearl earring. Pirates and mariners during the 18th century wore jewellery as a form of life assurance. A gold earring would pay for their burial, and there was a code of honour of sorts which stated that such an earring should be used for that purpose alone and not be pocketed instead.
 
The 20th century, and WWII in particular, had a considerable impact on the wearing of jewellery among men, which has continued to this day. Traditionally, it was only women who wore a wedding ring. However, with being away for such a long time during the war, men wanted something to remind themselves of home and the loved ones waiting for them, and so they began wearing a plain gold ring on their left hand. This trend continued after the war, and since the 1950s most married men have chosen to wear a wedding ring.
 
The following decades have seen various fashions come and go, such as the long necklaces of the hippy era, large gold medallions in the 70s, eye-catching stones in the 80s, and a flirtation with dog tags and chunkier steel and titanium pieces in the 90s.
 
Trendsetters like Johnny Depp and David Beckham championed a slightly more extravagant look during the early 2000s. Today, stars such as Harry Styles, Machine Gun Kelly, Jaden Smith and Timothée Chalamet have continued along the same lines. At the same time, this is counterbalanced by a more minimalist look. A good example of this is the simple silver chain worn by the character Connell in the hit TV series Normal People. So popular did the necklace become that it even has its own Instagram account with almost 150,000 followers!

Comfortable jewellery to suit all styles

No matter what your style, what really matters is that you feel comfortable. As a well-known fashion photographer put it:
 
“Style is about confidence and wearing what feels natural. If you’re not comfortable wearing it, it probably won’t look good, so stick to jewelry that is within your comfort zone.”
 
Men can have slightly thicker wrists and wider throats and necks, which is why some of our styles are larger and use longer links. But everything is a matter of taste. Provided you think something is attractive and works for you, wear it! If it’s also kind to your skin and of good quality, then you can wear it as often and for as long as you want. Blomdahl is the most natural choice in Sweden when it comes to ear and nose piercing services. But did you know that Blomdahl exports both its medical piercing method and stylish jewellery to more than 30 countries worldwide? Some of you may perhaps have seen our posters and window stickers in stores on the Greek holiday islands or somewhere else around the world?!

…that Blomdahl is the only company producing ear and nose piercing jewellery in Sweden, and that we have been exporting our jewellery to other countries almost since 1985?
More than half of the jewellery produced by Blomdahl is shipped overseas. In addition to the Nordic region and the rest of Europe, we also send our products as far afield as the USA, the Middle East, Japan and Australia. Blomdahl can even be found in Greenland, and China is now home to the first store in the world stocked solely with jewellery from Blomdahl.
 
When it comes to our piercing products, use varies slightly from country to country, depending on regulations and culture. And there can be significant differences between countries, e.g. regarding when children first get their ears pierced. Opinions differ and the act of piercing the ears or nose is often strongly influenced by local tradition. For instance, some cultures find it unthinkable for young children to have their ears pierced, while others don’t understand why it should be a big deal.

In southern Europe it’s common to get ears pierced at an early age. In certain countries family health visitors make home visits and it’s not unusual for parents to ask them to pierce their children’s ears.
At the other end of the scale is Japan. Most people there wait until they complete compulsory education before getting their ears pierced, which is often done by a doctor.

How do we reconcile ever-changing trends and fashions in the jewellery world with the aim of consuming less, while also safeguarding quality? Blomdahl takes a long-term approach, based on sustainable thinking, without compromising on feel or style.

Lina Nyström is head of purchasing and development at Blomdahl and drives the creative work of devising new designs and collections. New products are launched every spring and autumn, which may be updated classics or brand new, contemporary designs.
 
The aim is also to ensure that newly launched pieces combine elegantly with our existing range. Spring jewellery featuring bright colours can inject a playful sense of energy, while in autumn many people opt for a more muted colour palette, focusing perhaps on just one shade. A few well-loved classics provide an excellent basic look for mixing and matching with new favourites. All to suit individual personal taste.
 
“We are basically aiming to marry stylish favourites with new influences. Any combination can work, just go with what feels right,” says Lina.

Inspiration can come from a variety of sources

Day-to-day design work takes place alongside all Blomdahl’s other activities, at its head office in the heart of Halmstad. The design department also conducts more systematic research. They monitor general trends and styles to determine which will stand the test of time.
 
“Inspiration can come from a variety of sources and at any time, after all you can’t switch off your subconscious,” says Lina. “Shapes and colours are everywhere, and ideas can sometimes come from the most unexpected quarters.”
 
“We are often inspired by fashion in our work, which is hardly surprising, since jewellery is frequently an important element of styling. One of our most recent products ‘V’ is a prime example of this. It has a clear link to some of the more long-lasting silhouettes that have been around for a while in the fashion industry,” she says.

A distinct design philosophy

Determining which ideas will be turned into new designs is down to a group known as the product committee, made up of representatives from the design, marketing and sales departments, along with Blomdahl’s CEO, Nina Andersson.
 
“We look at the sketches Lina has come up with and provide feedback. Discussions around the design table can get quite animated, but it generally always works out well,” says Nina.
 
Blomdahl in fact has a distinct design philosophy to adhere to, with no exceptions allowed.
 
The jewellery must always be kind to skin – in other words, it must be possible to produce the designs in the materials Blomdahl uses. These materials are selected to guarantee that our jewellery is skin-friendly and also comfortable to wear. 
 
The jewellery must also have a stylish and timeless design – it’s about being open to trends in the right way. It should feel contemporary, but not be a fad that vanishes after a few months.
“We aim to offer jewellery that can be worn regularly and loved for a long time to come, something that feels good deep down,” concludes Lina.

At our production facilities in Halmstad, we work with your best interests at heart, all day, every day. Here, we create jewellery that you’ll want to wear all the time and which is so kind to your skin that you can.

A special medical method is used by Blomdahl’s ear and nose piercing consultants that inserts sterile, skin friendly piercing jewellery. To guarantee the safety and reliability of this method, the jewellery used has to be sterile. And for the piercing jewellery to be sterile, it first has to be very, very clean. That is why all production of ear and nose piercing jewellery takes place in a so-called clean room. Here, the elimination of particles and microorganisms, i.e. dirt that is invisible to the naked eye, is always our top priority.

A never ending hunt for invisible dirt

Working in a clean room carries a lot of responsibility and demands a great deal of commitment, with special procedures that have to be followed at all times. To access the clean room, for example, you have to pass through a purpose-built changing room, where employees change into special protective clothing. Hands are washed and disinfected. Hairnets, special clean room socks and antistatic footwear are also worn. Once in the clean room, staff are not allowed to use tobacco products, chew gum or eat. As particles can be present on jweellery, this cannot be worn either. The same goes for make-up hair accessories, false nails, lash extensions and watches. All to minimise the number of particles in the air and the number of microorganisms on surfaces, thereby ensuring that the end product is as clean as possible.
 
In addition to hygiene procedures for the people who work in the clean room, the room itself is also cleaned, with specific daily, weekly and monthly schedules to be followed. Four times a year, a deep clean is carried out, with subsequent independent testing of the number of particles and microorganisms present on all surfaces.

But our efforts don’t stop there

We also maintain a constant positive air pressure in the clean room. This means that the air in the room is forced out, which prevents dirty air from getting in. An uninterrupted flow of new, clean air is supplied to the room through high efficiency filters, ensuring continued replacement of air. You could say that everything in a clean room is designed to keep the air as ‘empty’ or as clean as possible.
 
Once the piercing jewellery has been packaged and checked in the clean room, it is sterilised and is ready to be worn.

It all began in 1985, when Blomdahl only made jewellery for piercing ears. The focus was on ensuring that the method used to pierce ears was both safe and hygienic, with medical grade plastic being deemed the ideal material.
 
Gradually we realised that people with sensitive skin had very little choice when it came to hypoallergenic jewellery, which led Blomdahl to launch its first ‘ordinary’ earring styles.
 
The styles MP 4 mm, Bezel, Ball and Tiffany in pure medical grade titanium were introduced in 1998.

First and most popular – MP 4 mm

Many people, having had their ears pierced, wanted to continue wearing the same earrings after the piercings had healed. That’s how our bestseller came into being. ‘The MP4’ is our most popular earring ever. The name may be reminiscent of a music file, but it is in fact a round earring in medical grade plastic, set with stones of various colours. However, the one set with clear crystal is – and has always been – our bestseller year after year, and that includes internationally.

Bezel – small but mighty

To begin with, the small sparkling stone was only available in small sizes, 3 and 4 millimetres, which meant that when we introduced our 5-millimetre stone, many customers thought it enormous! Still, tastes have changed – back and forth – and now it’s also possible to get Bezel in up to 8 millimetres.

Tiffany – a classic in many guises

Our Tiffany earrings with their characteristic claw setting and a sparkling stone or pearl are available in a range of colours and sizes, with the popularity of styles fluctuating over the years. Jewellery trends come and go, and while the shape has remained the same, sizes and colours have varied widely. We have had everything from 3 millimetres up to 9 millimetres, and Tiffany is now produced with both a gold-coloured and silver-coloured coating. The Tiffany range was expanded in 2016 to include necklaces and rings too.

Ball – Pearl’s discreet sibling

Ball, which is a titanium ball available in the colours gold, silver and black, is not quite as popular as Pearl, its big sister with a shimmering pearl, but still sells in large numbers. We can easily see why. A versatile option that complements a great many styles of dress and personalities, thanks to its discreet, minimalist design.

Nothing beats a pale pink heart

The heart is one of those symbols that children of every generation have loved, and will probably always love. Our pale pink, or more accurately light rose, heart in medical grade plastic was launched in 2009 and its popularity has never waned. Children are often more interested in classic shapes, such as hearts, stars and flowers, than adults.

A taste of nostalgia at Börjes Konditori in Harplinge
A real institution according to anyone born in Halmstad who has a sweet tooth. This patisserie opened in the 1950s, when the jukebox never stopped playing, and in the 80s was the favourite post rehearsal hang out of pop group Gyllene Tider. It’s still the place to go for ANYONE who loves cakes, pastries and great sandwiches. With its charming, pared-back 50s-style décor, it harks back to simpler times. Just outside Halmstad, in Röinge, is Patriks Prylar. A mecca for anyone who loves fun knick-knacks and re-use. Here, you’ll find an eclectic mix of styles and collectibles, including neon signs, lamps, porcelain and renovated furniture. A treasure trove of fascinating and fun objects.

Lovely walking trails at Biskopstorp nature reserve
If you’re the outdoorsy type, then Biskopstorp nature reserve is the ideal place to visit. Take a hike through undulating scenery, with its babbling brooks, tranquil lakes, ancient woodland and grazing cattle. There are also landscaped trails designed to make access easier for those using a wheelchair or with a stroller or pram, as well as plenty of benches, picnic tables, toilets and parking. The ideal excursion for a cloudy day. Perhaps you enjoy fishing too? Fishing is permitted at Lake Kroksjön, where if you’re lucky you can catch pike, perch and roach.

Relax on the beach at Frösakull
If the beach is your thing, then you’ve come to the right place. Most people are familiar with the four-kilometre stretch of sand at Tylösand, which is always a good choice. However, there is a quieter but no less beautiful beach at Frösakull, just to the north of Tylösand. The atmosphere may be calmer, but there are still plenty of activities on offer, including a volleyball net for those who love sports.
 
Impressive views and secluded bays for swimming along the Prins Bertil trail
If you want to hike and swim, then we recommend trying the Prins Bertil trail, which is perhaps Halmstad’s most beautiful hiking trail. It runs for 18 kilometres, starting in central Halmstad and ending at Möllegård nature reserve. Pack a picnic and your swimwear, and head out to explore everything that nature and the local area has to offer, from sandy beaches, coastal woodland, cliffs and old quarries to picturesque harbours and fishing bays.

Plenty of people these days check the ingredients in everything from food and drink to make-up and skin creams. They want to know what they’re eating and applying to their skin, but also how different substances affect the body. Until now jewellery hasn’t been subjected to the same scrutiny, but interest in this area is growing. It’s something that we at Blomdahl regard as an exciting development, as it’s just as important for our health and wellbeing. Here’s a brief introduction to jewellery for those who cares about what they wear every day.

All manner of materials can be used to produce jewellery. Fabric, leather, rubber, pearls, bones and feathers – when it comes to adorning the body, the human imagination is boundless. In spite of that, the most common material used in jewellery is still metal. Unfortunately a lot of metals contain substances that aren’t always good for humans or our skin. The EU has regulations covering this, which govern, among other things, the permitted rate of nickel release from a piece of jewellery.

Did you know that…
…an allergy can develop at any age? The greater the exposure to a substance, the greater the risk of being affected.

Nickel allergy is by far the most common contact allergy, but what you might not know is that 10% of all people are allergic to gold. All metals contain nickel to some degree, although it may only be minute amounts. The term ‘nickel-free’ is therefore a little misleading.
 
Here at Blomdahl it has always been our policy to produce earrings using medical grade titanium or medical grade plastic. There is none or so little nickel in our jewellery that the nickel content is, in essence, zero. This means that you cannot develop a nickel allergy from wearing our jewellery, and that someone who already has a nickel allergy can wear jewellery from Blomdahl.

Did you know that…
…nickel leaches out more quickly in damp environments? An earring in close contact with the skin is exposed to more moisture than, for example, a necklace or bracelet that is worn loosely.

Blomdahl’s necklaces, bracelets and anklets are produced using high-quality stainless steel. We then apply a beautiful but durable coating that gives the piece its gold or silver colour, but which also encapsulates the nickel present in the steel. This coating is unique to Blomdahl and has been developed in consultation with dermatologists.

One of Blomdahl’s most popular styles comes from the Tiffany range. It is a classic piece of jewellery featuring a stone or pearl mounted in the characteristic claw setting. Tiffany is available in several designs, including necklaces and rings, but by far the most popular item is earrings.
 
Here you can see all the stages that a pair of Tiffany earrings with gold coating goes through before gracing your jewellery box or becoming a beautiful gift.

1: The raw material, medical grade titanium, is delivered as long rods to our production site in Halmstad, Sweden. Each delivery is accompanied by a certificate that guarantees the content. In addition, we X-ray the titanium to be 100% certain that its purity matches that stated on the certificate.
 
2: The titanium is first shaped into the characteristic Tiffany style.
 
3: We then polish the piece of jewellery to ensure an elegant finish and make it comfortable to wear. 
 
4: The Tiffany earring now receives its beautiful gold coating. Samples from each batch are subjected to rigorous treatment to ensure the coating has adhered correctly.

5: It’s time for Tiffany to get its sparkling stone or pearl, which is set by hand. The piece is checked again to ensure that all elements are correct.
 
6: A visual inspection is also carried out before the piece is put into its hygienic jewellery packaging, known as Clean pack. In other words, we look carefully to check that everything is as it should be.
7: The earrings are now sealed in their Clean pack using a special label. The unbroken seal is your guarantee that no one else has tried your Tiffany earrings before you. The packaging is also labelled with a code that enables us to trace the exact batch of material used in production.

The start of your jewellery journey - what is good to think about?
Have the wishes started yet in your household? Once children get to a certain age, it’s almost impossible to avoid the issue of ear piercing. And undoubtedly there’s something special about wearing different earrings to make you look nice. This is the start of a jewellery journey that lasts a lifetime. But when it comes to piercing a child’s ears, what is the best age? Should your child be allowed to decide when they are ready? Are there arguments for waiting? And are there any risks?
Let’s start with the assumption that your child wants to have their ears pierced and you have started to wonder if it’s a good idea. The best thing you can do is to read about the process, and what may be useful factors to consider before and after. Perhaps you want to know what other people are doing. However, ultimately only you as a parent know what is best for your child.
What is the best age for having ones ears pierced?
 
There is obviously no simple answer to this. In general no particular age is better or worse than any other. And there are just as many differing opinions as there are parents. There are also big cultural differences. In some countries it’s common for children to have their ears pierced at just a few months old, while in other countries it’s unusual to have it done at all.
 
We know from experience that many children tend to find it appealing to have pierced ears when they start school, which in Sweden in any case, is at the age of seven. Perhaps because they see other children with pierced ears, with some parents viewing it as an indicator that pre-school days are over and the child is now becoming “grown up”. Other people feel that the child should be old enough to take responsibility for keeping the holes clean themselves. Some people consider 10 or possibly 12 to be a good age.
 
From a legal standpoint, anyone under the age of 18 years must have consent from a parent or guardian to get their ears pierced. In other words, it’s up to a parent to decide if or when they want their child to get their ears pierced.
Is it dangerous?

Ear piercing is not dangerous, but any hole made in the skin carries a risk of infection. However, complications are not very common. As long as the hole is kept clean, dry and aired it should heal quickly. It’s a good idea to remind your child not to fiddle with their earrings with dirty fingers.

The issue of allergies almost always comes up in connection with piercings. Allergies can develop at any time in your life, and a piercing makes you more vulnerable to unsuitable materials, such as nickel, palladium, cobalt, etc., and even gold and silver. We are therefore careful to use only the very safest of materials. Blomdahl’s products have been developed in consultation with dermatologists and our jewellery is suitable for everyone, including individuals with sensitive skin and contact allergies.

How is the piercing done?

Even though children often long for the big day, they can often have second thoughts after the first hole has been pierced. With this in mind Blomdahl has developed a unique method in which both ears are pierced at the same time. The process is faster, feels safer and is more comfortable for the child (and accompanying parents…).

Blomdahl’s ear piercing consultants are certified and use sterile disposable products. The spot to be pierced is marked and the skin is thoroughly cleaned. The actual piercing is carried out using a sterile earring in a sterile disposable holder. The parts that touch the skin come from the sterile pack, and they are not touched by anyone else and do not come into contact with anything.

Does it hurt?

Yes. No. Maybe a little. Just like adults, all children have differing pain thresholds. Some say it burns a little. Others think it’s akin to a mosquito bite. The site of the piercing may feel hot and a bit sore immediately afterwards, but this will soon pass.

Things to think about afterwards

Most children regard the day they get their ears pierced as a big occasion. Do something special to celebrate!

It takes roughly six weeks for a piercing in the earlobe to heal. During this time it’s essential to keep the skin around the hole clean, dry and airy to avoid it becoming infected.
It can be a good idea to talk to your child about the importance of aftercare – for example, that they and their friends must not touch the newly made holes and to be careful when putting tops on and taking them off, and so on.

When helping your child with aftercare, always wash your hands before touching the earlobes and clean both front and back with liquid soap and running water, e.g. in the shower. One useful option is Blomdahl’s Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs. A highly practical option when you don’t have access to clean running water.

How soon can you switch to other earrings?

After six weeks it should be fine, but still take care when changing earrings. Since the skin that has formed inside the holes is thin and delicate, it can easily be damaged or become infected. It’s a good idea to continue with the routine of washing your hands, and also cleaning the earrings, when changing them, as well as continuing to keep the skin around the holes clean, dry and airy throughout the first year.

What happens if you take the earrings out too soon?

If the earrings are taken out before the new skin has properly formed, the holes will heal up again. If this happens within the first few weeks, it’s almost as if the hole was never made. So ideally make sure earrings are worn continuously for the first year because the holes can shrink and/or grow again.

What kind of earrings should you switch to?

Once the healing process is complete and it’s time to switch earrings, it’s still important to wear earrings made from materials that are skin friendly, such as medical grade titanium or pure medical plastic. This will protect the new, slightly more sensitive skin that has now formed.

It’s also important to think about choosing appropriate earrings for the occasion. If your child is active and there is a risk of the earrings catching on something, it’s a good idea to opt for post earrings. However, remember not to push the back on too tight, as this may cause problems with healing.

If the healing is taking a little longer, earrings on a hook of pure, medical grade titanium or medical plastic can be a useful solution. With earrings like that it’s easier to keep the holes clean, dry and aired.

In order for Blomdahl to keep living up to its motto, everyone should be able to feel beautiful every day, a variety of skills, expertise and personalities are required. It also requires a company culture where people can develop as individuals and as a group.

So, what’s it really like, working at Blomdahl? We asked the same questions to three of Blomdahl’s employees. Although they work in different parts of the organization, each one talked about the high level of team spirit and dedication that exists among Blomdahl employees. Are there other reasons too, why they are all so happy with their jobs?

Jenny Jönsson knows craftsmanship.
Production employee. Has worked at Blomdahl almost 3 years now

“Hi Jenny! Could you please tell us what an ordinary day at work is like for you?”

“Hi! Well, one day can be very different from the next, actually. None of us working in production do the same thing each day. In fact, we rotate between different tasks. My task on a particular day might be glueing the stones onto a particular piece of jewellery. The next day, however, I might be packing them into our clean packs and the day after that, I might be working with logistics and packing the orders. These are just examples, but that’s how it works. I’ve noticed that I particularly enjoy working with logistics, so I happily do that task a little more often. In production, the task you have been assigned for the day is what you will do for the entire day. We also have a notice board showing our assigned task for the next day.

We all eat breakfast together at 9.30, have lunch at noon and a coffee break at 2.45 in the afternoon. It’s all very casual and relaxed. During the pandemic, we’ve had to keep our offices and production separate, to observe social distancing. Otherwise, we would all be sitting together.”

“What do you like the most about your job?”

“My co-workers and the atmosphere. We all work as a team, helping each other achieve our goals. We always know that we can count on each other. The atmosphere is just great. Everyone is so encouraging, offering tips and suggestions on how to improve. Nobody is just sitting there quietly trying to make themselves look good. I really love that no single day is like the next. There’s always something new happening. Of course, there’s that sense of immense pride too, when we see how beautiful the products are.”

“What did you do before you started working at Blomdahl?”

“I worked in a store for 15 years, with clothing and shoes. So, switching over from a service position into production was a big change. The working hours here were a bit plus. As the mother of small children it was nice, no longer having to work evenings and weekends. I’d always been curious about Blomdahl as a company, too, since I also live in Halmstad.

“How are the development opportunities here?”

“We have middle managers who are very good at their jobs and discovering each person’s strengths. I feel that they truly listen and that I can get involved, contribute and make a difference. Because the production tasks are so varied, there might be some things you like more than others. In that case, you can flag it for management and let them know that you are interested in taking on more responsibility in that particular department. In time, you could then get promoted to supervisor there. But available positions don’t come up so often because it is rare for anyone to resign.” "

“Hi Christina! Could you please tell us what an ordinary day at work is like for you?”

“Hi! Ha ha, that’s a funny question. Because there really is no such thing as an ordinary day at work here at Blomdahl. And thank goodness for that. I work with both education and aftermarket. I’m also the person who answers when someone calls our support line. So, my working day is very dependent on who calls and what they need help with. The thing I do control myself is the administration of our education for new customers around the country who want to become certified piercers. The planning for that is a lot of fun. In addition, I am one of the contacts for our retailers when they require more information about our products and services. I also speak with many consumers who reach out to us with questions about products and piercing.”

“What do you like the most about your job?”

“Well, it’s probably when I notice that our efforts really do make a difference. Sometimes, a person might call with some sort of criticism, yet, by the time we end the call, they are happier and more satisfied. Turning something negative into a positive feel very right. Those of us working at Blomdahl frequently talk about how we regard ourselves as a good friend who wants to help and takes the time to explain. I also appreciate that we have the entire chain of manufacturing right here in Halmstad. Everything is done here, from start to finish. That’s quite unique, in fact.”

“What did you do before you started working at Blomdahl?”

“I’ve worked both in reception and at a bank. And, before I started at Blomdahl, I worked for a large company for 25 years. One of the reasons I wanted to work there was because I got the chance to try out many different positions and develop my skills. But when they moved their business to a different location, I decided to stay here in Halmstad and that’s when I started as an inside salesperson here at Blomdahl.

“How are the development opportunities here?”

“Good, I’d say. Like I said, I started out as an inside salesperson. With time though, I began working more and more with support and education. When the aftermarket part of the business started to grow, I was asked if I wanted to take over and be in charge of that. So now, I report directly to our CEO, Nina. It involves a lot of freedom under responsibility. It is clear what is expected of me and I receive good feedback."

“Hi Lina! Could you please tell us what an ordinary day at work is like for you?”

“Hi! It quite varied. That’s the simple answer. I have a fairly wide area of responsibility, since I partly work with development and design and partly with purchasing. It involves many external contacts and managing relationships with our suppliers, which means finding new ones and maintaining close collaboration with, and following up on, our existing suppliers. Besides new launches and making continuous improvements to our existing jewellery, there is the constant effort to ensure the quality of our deliveries. They are, after all, the very heart of what we produce. Of course, I don’t do all of this alone, thankfully. We have one more person here working as a buyer. We also have a product advisory team that designs, develops and produces our various types of jewellery.

“What do you like the most about your job?”

“The variation. No question about it. Working simultaneously with both large and small projects offers a good dynamic that is right for me. I like the quick pace of certain tasks. I also like working with longer development projects. In addition, I have amazing colleagues who also constantly want to make a difference and improve. Particularly with development projects, you really want to see results, since in the end, you know it makes a difference for others.”


“What did you do before you started working at Blomdahl?”

“I have a business degree from Växjö, Sweden, and after graduating, I first worked with medical and healthcare products, where I was primarily focused on the marketing side of things. Before starting to work at Blomdahl, I worked at a food company that offered grain products. I was in marketing there too, and a product manager.


“How are the development opportunities here?”

“Given that I’ve never previously worked with either development or purchasing before coming to work here, I’d say that the opportunities are extremely good. Sure, I had run projects in various ways before and I guess you could say that there are similarities as regards the basic view of products. For example, there was a philosophy that gluten-free should always taste good, just like here, where hypoallergenic jewellery should always be beautiful. Anyway, I was offered an opportunity and I took it. Once I started working here, I then quickly learned a lot from Nina, who held this position before me prior to taking over as CEO. Since then, we’ve developed as a team, together with everyone else here at Blomdahl. It’s certainly is an exciting journey that we’re on!

• Remember to handle your skin friendly jewellery with care, so that it stays beautiful for a long time. We suggest that you keep it in the Clean Pack or a jewellery box when you aren’t wearing it.

• Avoid getting makeup, hair products, alcohol or other chemicals on your jewellery.

• Take off your rings when you do things like exercise, housework, gardening, etc.
You are the first person to touch your new jewellery from Blomdahl. Our earrings and nose jewellery are delivered in a Clean Pack, which ensures that it stays hygienic from the point when it has been completely manufactured until you open the packaging. The label also serves as a seal.

"In Sweden there is an old proverb which says that “you have to suffer in order to be beautiful”. But that is…just old. Especially if you ask any of the more than 50 women working at Blomdahl.

“Uncomfortable jewellery that irritates your skin, makes it itch and could even be harmful is something we want nothing to do with. We think that everyone should be able to wear jewellery and that’s why we make sure that Blomdahl jewellery is always beautiful, kind to your skin and manufactured in a fair way.

These are the words of Kalle Blomdahl, founder of the Swedish company, Blomdahl, which designs and manufactures skin friendly jewellery and medical instruments for nose and ear piercing.

Making beautiful jewellery is an art. But making beautiful jewellery that takes into consideration people’s health, both long-term and short-term, is even more difficult.

“It is possible though! And we will always keep our promises,” says Kalle.

It all started to take shape in 1985 when Kalle and his father, Lasse Blomdahl, started up their family-owned company in Halmstad, Sweden. The innovations that they came up with were possible thanks to Lasse’s background in medical technology and two of the high profile medical issues during that era: nickel allergy and HIV.

Sitting at home at the workbench, they developed the first piercing jewellery of pure medical grade plastic, guaranteed to be entirely nickel free.

But nickel allergy was not the only risk facing people who wanted to get their ears pierced back in the 1980s. Lasse and Kalle knew that the piercing systems used back then had serious shortcomings and they were convinced that it should absolutely be possible to avoid such serious risks as contracting a bloodborne disease when getting a piercing.

So, with the health care system as a role model, they developed a new piercing system for hygienic and safe ear piercing: Blomdahl Medical Ear Piercing.

Blomdahl become first in the world to launch a sterile, disposable product, with sterile jewellery and earring backs for ear piercing.

“We have always been creative and well ahead of our time,” says Kalle.

And because of that, Blomdahl has always set the bar high. In fact, even higher than what the law requires. As proof of that, the company has obtained ISO 13485 certification for manufacturing of medical devices, which serves as a stamp of quality on what Blomdahl delivers.

Right from the start, Blomdahl has been all about style and safety

The jewellery should feel timeless and at the same time be both beautiful and kind to the skin. It requires ambitious product development, precision and independent quality controls.

“Not everyone is able to do this and in fact, many make compromises in order to keep the costs down. But we will always create jewellery that delivers on our promises,” says Kalle.

With the help of, for example, skin specialists at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö, Sweden, they keep themselves up to date on the latest in safe materials, all with the aim of choosing what’s best for the consumer.

Besides nickel and other substances that can cause contact allergies, they also avoid toxic, carcinogenic and other harmful substances such as cadmium, lead, formaldehyde and bisphenol A. Today, for example, all of Blomdahl’s earrings are thus manufactured in carefully selected, pure medical grade plastic and titanium.

Part of the success is having the right people at the right place.

The family-owned company now has more than 50 employees, all of whom contribute their knowledge and are extremely dedicated.

“Our strength really does come from within. And, there is build-in thoughtfulness in being as meticulous as we are. Caring about others is the common denominator for all of us who work at Blomdahl. We love beautiful jewellery and are proud of being able to make a difference. It feels good when customers contact us to say that now, for the first time in a very long time, they can wear earrings without any problems,” says Nina Andersson, CEO at Blomdahl.

Most of the employees at Blomdahl are women and many of them have children. Each one has their own taste and preferences when it comes to stylish jewellery. When new designs and concepts are being tested, Blomdahl employees and their families provide valuable feedback.

Blomdahl’s design is classic and stylish. Regardless of whether the jewellery has been designed for an adult or child, it still feels timeless and beautiful. Most important of all though, regardless of the shape and colour, is that the parts of the jewellery that come into contact with the skin are guaranteed to be skin friendly. One example is the surface coatings that are used, in shades of gold, silver or black. These coatings are only put on the parts of an earring that do not come into contact with the skin. The parts that are in constant contact with the skin are always manufactured in pure, medical grade titanium.

“This is something that is unique in the jewellery world and it is quite costly. We do it though, because we are convinced that the work we do really does make a difference. Wash your hands

It is important to do everything possible to prevent dirt and bacteria from getting into your new piercing. Therefore, make sure that you don’t touch your newly pierced nose jewellery without first washing your hands. Never poke inside the nose.

Cleanse the nose

Cleanse the new piercing on the outside of the nose, morning and evening. Keep the nose jewellery in, even while cleansing.

When showering/washing your hair, use a liquid soap and rinse thoroughly with running water. Dry the area using a clean tissue or Q-tip.

For cleansing at other times, use Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs, which are gentle to the skin. You can use them to clean between the nose jewellery and the skin on the outside of your nose. Allow to air dry. Use a new cleansing swab each time you cleanse.

Important to keep in mind

There are some things to keep in mind and which help ensure that the healing process goes as smoothly as possible.

Clean, dry and airy

Make sure that you always keep your new piercing clean, dry and airy. Cover your nose and protect the new piercing when you apply makeup, perfume and other products.

Pushing the nose jewellery back in

The nose jewellery used for piercing does not have a clasp. Instead, it has an olive-shaped tip, which helps ensure that it does not slide out during the healing period. Depending on the amount of swelling inside the nostril, the jewellery may, despite that, still start to slide out. If that happens, thoroughly wash your hands and then use one of your fingers to push the jewellery back in again.

Extra caution

Be extra careful when pulling clothes over your head, when you wash and dry your face, and when blowing your nose. You can even put an adhesive bandage over the nose jewellery while sleeping. You have a sharp point inside the nostril, so it is important that you avoid any activities where there might be impact to your nose.

Swimming

When swimming in a pool, lake or the sea: Wait with this as long as possible and avoid dunking your head under the water. After swimming, cleanse the piercing using a liquid soap or Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs.

IMPORTANT!

Any of the following could be an indication of infection: redness, swelling, pain or rash. Remove the jewellery, cleanse the area and consult with a doctor immediately.

Switching to a different piece of nose jewellery

After about 4 weeks, you can switch to ordinary nose jewellery. Wash your hands and the outside of your nose thoroughly. Carefully remove the piercing jewellery and put in a clean, new piece of nose jewellery.

The piercing will still be healing throughout the first year

It takes up to a year before the piercing is fully healed, so make sure to keep the following in mind:

• Always wear nose jewellery. Otherwise, the hole can shrink and/or close up again.

• Be careful when switching to a new piece of nose jewellery. Because the skin that has formed inside the hole is thin and delicate, it is also easily damaged and at risk for infection. Therefore, clean the nose jewellery and your hands before switching. Also, make sure to still keep the piercing clean, dry and airy.

• A nose piercing makes the skin extra sensitive and the risk of developing an allergy is greatest during the first year. That is why you need to be extra careful with your choice of jewellery. Blomdahl has developed jewellery in consultation with skin specialists that is proven to be gentle to the skin and suitable for anyone, particularly those who have only recently had their nose pierced.

What is it though, that determines whether or not we are happy at work? According to a 2019 survey by Yougov, the things that Swedes value the most are good colleagues and rewarding work tasks. But other things that matter a lot are a good balance between work and home and knowing that the work you do helps make the world a better place.

At Blomdahl, it is very important that employees have a good work environment and the company has a policy underlying all of its long-term decisions and all of the activities that are carried out on a daily basis.
